ATLANTA - The season is just two games in, but the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions have already matched their win total from last year.
FHU scored four times in the first half on their way to a 5-0 win over Atlanta Christian College on Monday afternoon, improving to 2-0 on the new season.
Last year, the Lady Lions went 2-13-2 in a season riddled with injuries.
In today's match, Freed-Hardeman wasted little time in opening the scoring as Helena Yegros scored the first of her two goals in the fourth minute. Morgan Walls sent in a cross from the right side to Yegros, who finished with a strong shot to the left post for her first goal of the season.
FHU struck again four minutes later, this time with Whitney Newby dribbling through the ACC defense and delivering a shot from the top of the box that sailed past Lady Charger keeper Amber Brenton.
Yegros netted her second goal in the 15th minute, taking a pass from Newby on the left side of the goal and once again finishing to the left post.
Newby and Yegros connected again in the 32nd minute to give the Lady Lions a 4-0 lead. Briley Collins headed a long ball from the left side to Yegros, who in turn sent a well-placed through ball to Newby. The sophomore then beat Brenton again to record her third goal of the season and ninth of her career.
FHU's final goal came in the 52nd minute when Julie Bracknell rocketed a shot at Brenton. Brenton deflected the ball but Walls was there to punch in the rebound.
As they did on Saturday, the Lady Lions dominated possession outshooting ACC 30-2. FHU took 15 shots on goal.
Freed-Hardeman returns to action on Thursday, Aug. 26, on the road against Pikeville (Ky.) College. An FHU win would give the Lady Lions the first 3-0 start in program history.
