MT. VERNON, Ga. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions started off the new season on a positive note with a 3-0 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College on Saturday afternoon.

It was a solid effort all around for the Lady Lions, who are looking to rebound from an injury-marred two-win season in 2009.

"I thought we played well," said FHU head coach Jason Elliott.   "We played really well in the second half. The the girls played hard all over the field and went in hard for most challenges."

FHU controlled the run of play for the majority of the match, but didn't get on the board until the 40th minute when sophomore Briley Collins opened the scoring.  Collins scored on a rebound of her own header that came after a cross from Shelby Murray.  BPC keeper Mallory Lashley deflected the first shot off the post, and Collins finished it off for the first goal of her collegiate career.

In the 60th minute, Whitney Newby took a through ball into the box and was sandwiched between Lashley and a BPC defender to earn a penalty kick.  The sophomore beat Lashley to the left post to give FHU a 2-0 lead.

Another through ball helped cap off the scoring for the Lady Lions in the 65th minute as Murray sent a well-placed ball down the middle of the field to freshman Morgan Walls, who responded by scoring her first career goal.

The Lady Lions outshot the Barons 30-2 with a 12-1 edge on shots on goal.  FHU senior keeper Tiffany Harris stopped the only shot she saw to post the 11th clean sheet of her career.

Freed-Hardeman returns to action on Monday, paying a visit to Atlanta Christian College for a 1:00 PM match.
