HENDERSON, Tenn. - In addition to seven new players, the Freed-Hardeman women's basketball program will also welcome a new assistant coach to the team this fall.
Jana Pearson, a native of Hatley, Miss., was recently hired to replace Lain Hinson, who accepted a coaching and teaching position at his alma mater of Lewis Co. HS in Hohenwald, Tenn., in June.
Pearson played four seasons at Harding (Ark.) University before transitioning into the role of graduate assistant from 2007-2009 with the NCAA Division II program. She was also a part of the track and field team in 2007 and was named to the Gulf South Conference Honor Roll from 2004-2007.
Though she did not attend FHU, Pearson is still quite familiar with the program at Freed-Hardeman. She attended the Lady Lions summer basketball camp as a camper and later worked as a camp counselor. Her brother, Brian, is a senior on the Lion basketball team.
FHU head coach Dale Neal felt that her previous connection to the program coupled with her knowledge of the game and personal values made her a great fit.
"Jana's character, Christian values and commitment to what FHU and our basketball program are all about make her a valuable addition to our staff," said Neal. "Her positive outlook and outgoing personality will serve her well in our recruiting endeavors. She has an excellent knowledge of the game and brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our program. We are so pleased to welcome her to our coaching staff."
Pearson holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Counseling. Before coming to FHU, she completed an internship at Texas Boys Ranch in Lubbock.
The Lady Lions open their season on Oct. 30 against Asbury (Ky.) University at 2:00 PM in the Sports Center.
