HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lion basketball team added its third recruit for next year's freshman class with the signing of Natalie Shumpert of Paducah, Ky.
Shumpert, a 5-foot-4 guard, has played on the varsity squad at Paducah Tilghman High School since the eighth grade. As a junior last season, she averaged 19.7 points per game, four rebounds per game, three assists per game, and four steals per game. She is a three-time all-district and all-region selection.
"Natalie brings a lot to the table," said FHU head coach Dale Neal. "She is very athletic. She is a great point guard who also has the skills common to a two guard. She can run the offense, drive to the basket or pull up and hit the three."
Additionally, Shumpert excels in track and field where she is a four-time state triple jump champion. She also won the state long jump championship her sophomore year. Off the floor, she is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
"We expect her to make a tremendous contribution to our success for the next four years," Neal said. "We have been impressed with her court demeanor. She has always demonstrated confidence and composure on the court."
Shumpert joins
Leslie Morgan (Philadelphia, Miss./Neshoba HS) and
Brittney Williams (Jackson, Tenn./Trinity Christian Academy) in the Lady Lions' 2009 recruiting class. She is the daughter of Willie and Ann Shumpert.
