JACKSON, Tenn. - The TranSouth Athletic Conference honored Freed-Hardeman senior pitcher Derek Williford as its pitcher of the week for the week ending April 25, 2010.

Williford, a 6-foot-2 left-hander, is the first Lion pitcher to receive the honor this season.

The senior from Whitehouse, Texas, earned the award on the heels of his seven-inning shutout victory over Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) on Friday, April 23.  Williford allowed five hits and four walks while striking out five and stranding seven Trojan runners.  It was the first shutout since March 17, 2007, for Williford, who has battled arm injuries throughout his career at FHU.

This season, Williford has worked back from injury to earn a starting spot in the weekend rotation in conference play.  In his four weekend starts, he is 1-1 with a 3.08 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.
