OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions piled on the runs to open a three-game series with Brescia (Ky.) University, taking a 24-14 win over the Bearcats on Friday evening.
Though there were 38 total runs scored and 36 combined hits in the game, only eight went for extra bases and neither team managed a homerun. Both teams, however, had their struggles defensively as they combined to make 14 errors with Brescia committing nine.
The Lions scored three in the top of the first but found themselves trailing 9-4 after two innings following an eight-run second by the Bearcats. FHU fought back with four runs in the third but Brescia again answered with three in its half of the inning.
From there, Freed-Hardeman kept scoring runs getting at least one in every inning of the game. But the Lion pitching finally found an answer for the Bearcats' bats, as Charlie Overturf (2-0) allowed two runs on three hits over 5.2 innings of work followed by a scoreless ninth inning thrown by Josh Reynolds.
FHU (11-7) took the lead for good in the top of the fifth on Leamond Arthur's RBI double that capped off a four-run inning, then blew the game open with seven runs in the eighth.
Robert Prieto had a fantastic day at the plate, rapping six straight hits after flying out to open the game. He also drove in three runs. Brian Bullard and Evan Mansell each recorded four hits while Joe Mike had three. Arthur and Justin Mackey both had two hits for FHU, and Mackey drive in a team-high four runs.
Bullard moved into sole possession of second place on the career RBI list after driving in three. He is now three RBI away from tying Robert Matlock for the program's best total at 163.
