JACKSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions exploded for 11 runs in their first game of the day, but cooled off in game two in splitting a pair of contests at the Union University Classic on Saturday.
FHU beat William Woods (Mo.) in game one, 11-7, before falling to Columbia (Mo.) 8-1 in their finale for the event. Both teams handed losses to the Lady Lions on Friday.
Freed-Hardeman struck quickly in the day's opening game, getting a three-run homerun from Brittany Yates to straightaway center field in the top of the first inning. After WWU got a run back in the bottom of the frame, the Lady Lions plated five more runs in the second with three coming on a Britney Caldwell shot that was almost identical to Yates' first-inning bomb.
FHU loaded the bases in the third with no one out, but William Woods pitcher Courtney Vincent managed to escape with allowing one run that came on a sacrifice fly by Jill Brock. WWU then got back into the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brittany Steverson's two-run double in the fifth to give FHU an 11-6 lead, and William Woods would only be able to get back one of those runs before Caldwell (3-1) finished the game for her third win of the season.
Freed-Hardeman rapped 14 hits in the first game with Steverson and Traci Gibbons collecting three apiece. Brock and Brandi Edwards each had two hits.
The Lady Lions took an early lead in the second game on a Betsy Picker RBI single in the first, but Columbia got it back in their half of the inning and took the lead for good with three more runs in the second.
The Lady Cougars scored three times again in the third to chase FHU pitcher Savannah Cole, then added a final run in the fourth inning while their pitcher kept Freed-Hardeman from scoring again.
Brock posted two more hits in the second game while Pickler, Yates and Edwards each had one for the Lady Lions.
