HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions got a much-needed win to start off the final week of the regular season, knocking off Lambuth (Tenn.) University 83-78 on Monday night at the FHU Sports Center.
The win came after the Lions (18-10, 10-4) fell out of the NAIA Top 25 one week before the final rating of the season.
FHU, playing without four reserves, took a 4-3 lead early in the game and never trailed the rest of the way. An 18-4 run midway through the first half helped the Lions open up a 25-11 lead and closed the half on a 9-2 run - capped by a 28-footer from Logan Greer at the buzzer - to take a 44-32 lead into halftime.
Freed-Hardeman's lead expanded to 16 with 9:25 left in the game, but the Eagles used an 11-3 run to pull back within eight points and later went on a 12-4 run to cut FHU's lead down to 81-77 with 52 seconds left.
But after a Zack Frey miss on the Lions' next possession, Vincent Barnes took a charge from a driving Antawn Long. Anthony Sampson then made a pair of free throws to put FHU up by six with 29 seconds left and essentially sealed the win.
Frey led all scorers with 28 points, 16 in the first half. Ken Bingham added 15 points while Greer had 12 and Sampson scored 11.
The Lions now finish the season with two must-win conference games against Lyon (Ark.) College on Thursday night and Bethel (Tenn.) University on Saturday afternoon.
