MAYFIELD, Ky. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions lost their second game in a row, dropping a 75-70 decision to Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Saturday afternoon.
The loss sends No. 20 FHU (17-10, 10-4) into a tie for second place in the TranSouth Conference with Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) and leaves them a half-game ahead of Mid-Continent (16-11, 9-4).
The Cougars used a 13-2 run midway through the second half to take a 62-55 lead with 7:22 left. They would hold that lead the rest of the way, though FHU had its chances. Three times in the final 3:30, the Lions had possession down by three but could not connect on 3-pointers to tie. A Ken Bingham putback off one of those missed 3's made the score 71-70 with :42 left.
But Chris Ferguson, a 69 percent free throw shooter, made both ends of a one-and-one and the Lions missed a 3-pointer with :14 remaining.
It was the second ranked team that MCU knocked off this week after defeating No. 10 Union (Tenn.) University on Thursday, also at home.
Zack Frey led Freed-Hardeman with 18 points, followed by Kyle Teichmann with 14. Vincent Barnes added 11 while Ken Bingham chipped in 10.
The Lions are now in a must-win situation in their last two games of the season, hosting Lyon (Ark.) on Thursday and traveling to Bethel (Tenn.) on Saturday.
