HENDERSON, Tenn. - Carlos Pertuz allowed one run over seven innings of work, picking up his first win of the season in leading Freed-Hardeman past Sterling (Kan.) College, 5-3, on Friday afternoon at Carnes Field.
Sterling's only run off of the senior came in the first inning after Pertuz walked two hitters to set up an RBI single by Jody Gonzalez. Afterward, the left-hander shut down the Warriors, allowing just two hits over the next six innings.
Meanwhile, the Lions got a run in the second on an RBI double by Joe Mike and two in the third on a two-out double by Leamond Arthur that scored Noslen Labrada and Brian Bullard.
Bullard hit a solo shot (3) to lead off the sixth inning and Garrett Ammons added a run-scoring single to give FHU a 5-1 lead.
Trae Luttrell relieved Pertuz in the eighth and got two outs before Gonzalez rapped a two-run double to cut the Lions' lead in half before Charlie Overturf pitched FHU out of the jam.
After an error by Mike to lead off the top of the ninth put the tying run at the plate for the Warriors, Overturf retired the next three batters to earn his first save of the season.
FHU improves to 3-2 on the season and wraps up its weekend series with Sterling with a double-header on Saturday.
