HENDERSON, Tenn. - Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University shot 58.9 percent and gained a measure of revenge on the No. 20 Freed-Hardeman Lions, posting a 95-87 win over FHU on Thursday night in the Sports Center.
Last month, it was Freed-Hardeman who pulled the road upset, beating then-No. 11 Trevecca by 19 on their home court.
Tonight, the shoe was on the other foot as the Trojans used a very efficient offense to hand the Lions (17-9, 10-3) their third conference loss of the season.
Trevecca led almost the entire game, taking the lead for good with 14:10 to play in the first half when a Keith Morris basket gave TNU an 11-9 lead. The Trojans expanded their lead to nine points (42-33) at halftime, then pushed it up to 16 points early in the second half.
FHU, however, responded with a 16-5 run to get within five points with 11:03 left. But Jeremy Dixon nailed a 3-pointer on TNU's next possession, and FHU got no closer than six points the rest of the way.
The Lions, who shot just 44.9 percent from the field, got 20 points apiece from Ken Bingham and Zack Frey. Logan Greer added 17 and Kyle Teichmann contributed 16 points off the bench.
The loss brings TNU (19-8, 10-4) a game closer to FHU in the conference standings and means that the Lions are in a must-win situation on Saturday when they travel to Mid-Continent (Ky.), who knocked off conference leader Union (Tenn.) tonight in Mayfield. An FHU loss in the game would drop the Lions into a tie with Trevecca for second place and would put Mid-Continent only a half-game behind both teams.
