PULASKI, Tenn. - It appears that the Freed-Hardeman Lions are making up for the cold shooting that plagued them for over a month.
The Lions started off the game hot and stayed that way, building a 27-point halftime lead and cruising to an 85-63 win over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College on Thursday night at the Curry Life Center.
For the second game in a row, the Lions (10-7, 3-1) did a large part of their damage from 3-point range, making 7-of-12 in the first half and finishing the game at 10-for-21. Jesse Moulton made six of them, five of which came in the first 12 minutes of play.
The first big FHU run came early in the game in the form of a 19-4 burst that gave the Lions a 25-11 lead at the 10:48 mark. Moments later, Freed-Hardeman followed with a 16-3 run to go ahead by 26 points with four minutes left in the half.
The Lions didn't let up in the second half, extending their lead to 31 points on several different occasions. The RedHawks (12-6, 1-4) finished the game by outscoring FHU 13-5 over the last six minutes to cut the final margin down to 22 points.
For the second game in a row, Freed-Hardeman held one of the NAIA's best 3-point shooting teams under 30 percent from beyond the arc. The RedHawks, who entered the game shooting better than 41 percent from long distance, made just 5-of-17 from 3-point range.
FHU also controlled the boards by a 34-23 margin against one of the nation's top rebounding squads. The Lions, in fact, grabbed offensive rebounds on 12 of their 20 missed shots.
Moulton led all scorers with 20 points while Kyle Teichmann added 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting off the bench. Zack Frey and Ken Bingham each had 15 points for the Lions. Anthony Sampson dished out a game-high nine assists to go along with no turnovers in an impressive performance filling in for injured point guard Kirtiss Brown.
FHU looks to keep their hot streak going on Saturday against Mid-Continent (Ky.) University, which the Lions host at 4:00 PM.
