JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lambuth (Tenn.) Eagles outscored the Freed-Hardeman Lions 14-4 over the final three minutes of play to claim an 89-77 win on Monday night at the Lambuth Athletic Center.
The loss is the fifth in six games for the Lions (8-6), who started out the season with a 7-1 record.
The Eagles (10-3) lived up to their reputation for forcing turnovers with pressure defense as FHU committed a season-high 32 turnovers while the Eagles took away 21 steals.
But the Lions were still able to stay close until the game's final minutes, yet were unable to get over the hump as the Eagles sealed the win by making free throws down the stretch.
Lambuth also helped its cause by making 9-of-16 from 3-point range for 56.3 percentage, well above its season mark of 30.6 percent entering the game, and shot 29 free throws to FHU's 11.
The Lions, meanwhile, struggled again from long distance making just 4-of-16 attempts from behind the arc. FHU is shooting just 30.2 percent (29-of-96) from 3-point range in its last six games after making 37.5 percent (60-of-160) thru its first eight.
Zack Frey and Kyle Teichmann each lead Freed-Hardeman with 16 points while Jesse Moulton had 15. Vincent Barnes added a career-high 14 points in his second career start. FHU dominated the boards, out-rebounding Lambuth 48-27.
The Lions return to conference play on Saturday when they host No. 18 Union (Tenn.) University at 4:00 PM.
