HENDERSON, Tenn. - Hits and runs were plentiful for the Freed-Hardeman Lions on Monday afternoon at Carnes Field, as FHU swept visiting MacMurray College 12-1 and 10-1 in a double header.
The Lions got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single by Michael Clayton, then tacked on three more in the second on George Otero's two-run homerun followed by an RBI double from Brian Bullard. MacMurray got one back in the third, but FHU exploded for eight runs in the fourth, an inning that saw the Lions get five hits and draw six walks.
Colin Medling then retired the side in the top of the fifth as FHU scored a run-rule victory. Trae Luttrell (1-1) got the win, allowing three hits and striking out six over four innings.
Willy Hernandez left the yard for the eighth time this season when he hit a three-run homerun in the fourth. He also tripled in the first inning as he went 2-for-3 on the day with three runs scored. Leo Alvarez also went 2-for-3, while eight other Lions each got a hit.
In the nightcap, FHU got two runs in the second on RBI singles by Daniel Peck and Garrett Ammons then added five more runs in the third to build a 7-0 lead. MacMurray picked up a run in the fifth, but the Lions scored three more times in the sixth with sacrifice flies from Aaron Hilton and Zack Smith bringing in two.
Derek Bush hit his second homerun of the year, a solo shot in the third. Bush and Ammons each had two hits for the Lions. Dakota Angell (1-0) picked up the win in five innings of relief of Medling, who opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings. Angel allowed one unearned run while striking out three.
The Lions (11-6, 1-2) will play a single game against McKendree (Ill.) on Wednesday before hosting Union (Tenn.) in a three-game TranSouth series over the weekend.
