HENDERSON, Tenn. - Tarrah Tucker and Britney Caldwell each tossed complete game shutouts, and Brittany Yates made her first collegiate homerun a dramatic one as the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions swept Lambuth (Tenn.) in a double-header on Thursday at Morgan Stadium.
Tucker (3-2) was dominant in game one, allowing only two infield hits and striking out 14 batters in FHU's 6-0 win. Caldwell hit her third homerun of the year, a two-run blast over the left field wall in the fourth inning, and Yates' two-run single highlighted a four-run fifth.
Yates went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles and two RBI in the first game. Traci Gibbons and Camille Cunningham each had run-scoring hits in the fifth inning.
In the second game, both FHU and Lambuth were able to get plenty of runners on base. Getting them home, though, was a different story. Lambuth stranded 11 runners while the Lady Lions stranded 12, including leaving the bases loaded twice.
But in the seventh, Caldwell led off with a walk and Yates drove a 1-2 pitch over the left-center field wall to give FHU a 2-0 win.
Caldwell (2-1) allowed only three hits but walked five batters as Lambuth had chances to score in several innings. Each time, though, Caldwell would find a way to shut the door. Lambuth starter Tai Meadows did the same until Yates' walk-off shot.
FHU improves to 5-3 on the season and travels to Union (Tenn.) on Monday for a double-header beginning at 3:00 PM.
