HENDERSON, Tenn. - The No. 6 Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions opened the game on a 20-2 run and never looked back in a 102-54 win over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Thursday night in the Sports Center.
FHU improves to 16-5 on the season with the victory and finishes the first half of conference play with a 6-2 record. Mid-Continent falls to 2-15 and 0-7.
The Lady Lions outscored the Lady Cougars 20-2 over the first nine minutes of play and led by as much as 31 in the first half thanks to 57.9 percent shooting from the field while holding MCU to 29.2 percent.
Mid-Continent was unable to make up any ground in the second half despite an impressive performance by transfer guard Tyqea Butler who finished the game with 23 points.
But the star of the night had to be Rakeshia Perry who set career-highs in four statistical categories. The freshman came off the bench to score 21 points, grab 11 rebounds, give out four assists, and take five steals.
"She played with a lot of intensity," said FHU head coach Dale Neal. "If she'll practice and play like that, then I don't think there's any limit to how good she can be."
Perry was one of seven Lady Lions to score in double figures. Tara Deatheridge had 20, including four 3-pointers. Hannah Parsley added 14 while Jana Cross and Chelsie Alsup each had 12 points. Meribeth Boehler chipped in 11 and Whitney Johnson had 10.
Freed-Hardeman gets a week off before hosting No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) University on Jan. 29. The Lady Trojans won the season's earlier game, 76-63, when FHU was without Cross.
Notes: FHU hasn't placed seven players in double figures since Nov. 4, 2005...The Lady Lions broke the century mark for the second time this season. They scored 104 points against Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) on Nov. 15, 2008...Deatheridge needs five 3-pointers to move into eighth all-time...Perry's 21 points and 11 rebounds was her second double-double of the season.
